How do 'Compete' activities work?

There are four types of 'Compete' activity in MYLO:

  • Race
  • Champ
  • Cloud
  • Splash

In each one you compete against other learners who are logged into MYLO, or if no one is available, you play against the computer.

Race

In 'Race' games, four players compete by answering questions correctly. You move ahead one place if you get a question right and fall back by one place if you answer incorrectly. The winner is the player in first place when the time runs out. This scores maximum points. Second and third place also score some kudos points, but last place doesn't gain anything.

Champ

In the 'Champ' game, the aim is both to survive until the time runs out and also to be the player with the monkey. This scores maximum points. If you survive to the end, by not losing your three lives, but don't have the monkey then you won't score any points at all. Therefore it is important to encourage the monkey to visit you. So how do you do that? The monkey loves bananas. If you answer a question correctly you will win a banana. When he sees the banana, the monkey will jump towards you to get the banana. He'll stay with you until either another player answers a question correctly or you answer a question incorrectly. If several players answer questions correctly at the same time then the monkey will visit them in the order they answered.

To be successful you will need to keep on answering questions to gain bananas in the hope that the monkey will be with you at the end of the game. Each time you answer a question incorrectly you lose a life. You will be out of the game when you have lost all your lives.

Cloud

The aim of this game is to survive until the game times out. You have three lives and need to answer questions correctly to hang on to them. You lose a life each time you answer a question incorrectly. However this is not the only danger in the game. There is a cloud that hovers overhead passing from player to player. If you have the cloud at the end of the game, then it will zap you and you'll be out of the game.

So you need to try and keep the cloud away from you by answering your question correctly whenever the cloud is overhead. The cloud will then move on to the next player. If you answer incorrectly, you'll be zapped, and lose a life and the cloud will stay overhead.

You can also protect yourself from the cloud by answering questions correctly the rest of the time so that when the cloud passes from player to player, it will avoid you. However, whenever you answer a question incorrectly you will become vulnerable again and the next time the cloud passes overhead, it will stop.

Splash

The aim of this game is to survive until the end. If you survive then you'll gain points. You start with two lives and can have a maximum of three lives at any point during the game. You gain a life by answering a question correctly, and you lose lives by answering questions incorrectly or by being hit by a water bomb thrown by another player.

You can throw water bombs too. As you answer questions correctly and win extra lives, your balloon is filled with water. When you reach three lives, then every time you answer a question correctly, you'll be able to throw a water bomb that will splat another player at random. If you drop below three lives, you'll need to build your lives back up to three before you can start throwing water bombs again. All surviving players get points, but anyone who 'splashed out' gets nothing.
